Knowing when it’s right to start living with a partner isn’t always easy, but for one gal, her man seems to be making things a lot harder than it needs to be.

The woman writes into Dear Colleen that she and her partner have been dating for four years and are now engaged. They live separately, but plan to move in together into his house because it’s bigger and was left to him when his mom died, but there seems to be one issue that they can’t quite get past.

Apparently the plan is for her to move in some time next year, but he has a female tenant who he seems to be in no rush to get rid of. The OP writes that they’ve been friends since college, and she’s lived there for five years, and he doesn’t seem to be doing much to get her to move out. He said the OP could move in while the tenant is there, but the OP notes “I want it to be our home from the start and wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing it with her,” adding, “It doesn’t help that she’s very attractive and swans around the place half naked.”

  • She wonders if she’s being unreasonable, and whether she should give him an ultimatum, and Colleen suggests she start taking control of the situation. She suggests the OP sell her place and move in with her fiancé regardless of the tenant, noting, “I’m not sure your boyfriend’s lodger would want to stay living with a couple, and it might give her the incentive to speed up her house hunting.” She adds that starting to make moves may give him a “push in the right direction,” noting, “actions speak louder than words.”
