Being able to afford to be a stay-at-home mom may sound like a luxury to some moms, but this mom is a little wary of taking on the role, and actually feels she needs to be paid for it. And while that may sound outrageous, when you hear her story you may actually agree with her.

A woman shares on Reddit that she and her partner already have two kids and she’s always gone back to work after her maternity leave is over. The pair is now considering a third child, and the woman’s partner would rather her become a stay-at-home mom if they do, but she’s a little worried about the idea.

She says that her boyfriend makes five times her salary and they “could easily afford for me not to work,” but since they aren’t married she’s concerned about being too dependent on her man. She’s worried about being financially vulnerable should their relationship end so she told him the only way she would stay at home is if he paid her almost $10,000 a month.

Her boyfriend thinks she’s “being ridiculous,” with the OP noting he’s “not even going to entertain the thought of rewarding my distrust,” so she basically told him if they have another baby she’s going back to work after her maternity leave is over.

She then asked Reddit if she was being ridiculous, and many think she was smart to be worried about her future.

    • “You need to protect yourself,” on person shared. “If your man has no interest in helping you achieve that, you have big problems.”
    • Another added, “A friend of mine has a relative in a similar situation – unmarried, gave up her job to raise the kids,” noting that after the kids grew up he moved his mistriss in and now the friend is now out of luck because she’s been out of the workforce too long to find a good job and isn’t entitled to her man’s money.
