The must-have fashion trends of 2020 were all about function and comfort. While some folks liked getting all dressed up with literally no place to go, most of us turned to soft and forgiving clothing to keep us cozy while working from home, with the occasional need for a video-call-approved outfit. These are the clothing items fashion editors, professional stylists and bloggers say they couldn’t stop wearing this year.

  • Loungewear – A step up from your old flannel PJs, lounge sets were a popular choice this year for lots of comfort-seekers, including fashion writer Gianluca Ruso, who says the Savage X Fenty satin pants make “working from home feel more luxurious.”
  • Nap dresses – It’s basically a nightgown, but it’s stylish enough to get the trendy name. Insider editor Courteney Larocca says she feels “instantly better” after putting a nap dress on and clothes don’t really get more comfortable than this.
  • Leggings – We’ve always worn them, but in 2020, leggings really became an everyday wardrobe staple. Fashion blogger Sarah Tripp’s favorites are Lululemon’s “soft and comfy” Align leggings and podcast host Rachel Schwartzmann prefers the ones from Girlfriend Collective, which are made from recycled and sustainable materials.
  • Dad jeans – Stylist Kemi Ajibare says her most-worn clothing item of the year was a pair of relaxed, baggy “dad” jeans, which she calls “an elevated basic.”
  • Cozy slippers – Since we didn’t leave the house as much in 2020, slippers were the preferred footwear for many folks this year, including editor Paige DiFiore. She says she put on a pair of J. Crew moccasin slippers with a sturdy sole in the spring and she hasn’t stopped wearing them yet.
