New Year’s Eve is definitely a holiday geared toward adults. Most kids aren’t even awake at midnight and they don’t get to ring in the New Year with a champagne toast, but there are still lots of ways they can celebrate. These fun ideas can help you welcome 2021 and create New Year’s Eve memories with the kids.

  • Have a mock midnight – If you know your kids won’t be able to stay up until midnight, do your countdown a few hours earlier instead. Then the little ones still get to participate in the tradition and can go to bed while the adults stay up to ring in the real New Year.
  • Create a piñata ball – Get crafty and make a ball-shaped piñata that looks like the one that drops in Times Square. Let the kids go crazy with paint, sparkly beads and glitter to decorate it and then at midnight, let them open it up and get the treats inside.
  • Drop balloons – Suspend a bunch of balloons in a net above the kids and release them at midnight.
  • Give a toast – Pop a bottle of sparkling cider and have the children take turns toasting each other with compliments.
  • Throw a slumber party – Pitch a tent or build a blanket fort in the living room, spend the evening in your PJs and let everyone crash together.
  • Dress up – Just because you’re staying home doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate New Year’s Eve in your fanciest clothes. Put on your party clothes and do a photoshoot with the kids to show off their look.
  • Have a game marathon – If your kids plan to stay up until midnight, they’ll need fun games to occupy the hours. Board games, a dance party, and karaoke will keep them entertained and don’t forget the glow sticks.
