The nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards are here. The Hollywood Foreign Press Associations picks for this year’s kudofest were revealed yesterday by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson on the “Today” show.
Netflix dominates in both fields with a total of 44 nominations, 24 of those in the movie categories. “Mank” leads the pack in the movie categories with six nods, followed by “Chicago 7,” “Nomadland,” “The Father,” and “Promising Young Woman.”
When it comes to the movie snubs and surprises…
- This year, the Golden Globes made history by nominating three female directors: Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman,” and Regina King for “One Night In Miami.” Prior to this, only five female directors had gotten nods across more than seven decades: Barbara Streisad, Jane Campion. Kathryn Bigelow and Ava DuVeray.
- Spike Lee’s Netflix film “Da 5 Bloods” has been an awards season favorite since it was released in June, but it got zero recognition from the HFPA. That especially comes as a surprise since they backed his early work like 1989’s “Do The Right Thing.”
- Sophia Loren made her comeback to acting in “The Life Ahead,” playing a Holocaust survivor who watches over children of local sex workers… but she got zero recognition for the role.
- Tom Hanks was left off the Best Actor list after his gritty performance in Paul Greengrass’ Western “News of the World.”
- Jared Leto was surprised to see himself nominated for his role in “The Little Things”… especially since the film was released “rather late,” and he didn’t even know the nominations were being announced.
The 78th annual Golden Globes happens on February 28th on NBC. This year, the kudofest will go bicoastal for the first time, with dynamic duo Amy Poehler and Tina Fey returning to host for the first time since 2015. Check out the nominations in major movie categories below, and the full list HERE.
