First impressions are important, especially when it comes to dating. But what can you tell about your date in less than a minute? According to new research on 1,000 singles, it doesn’t take very long to know if your date has the potential to be your partner. A new survey from Virgin Media finds “digital daters” know if they have chemistry with someone just 30 seconds into a video chat.

There’s nothing quite like that unique spark you feel when you connect with someone and you might think that not being face-to-face on a date would make it more challenging to recognize. But it turns out, virtual dating has its advantages and being able to feel that instant connection is one of them. Dating expert Serena Kerrigan says chemistry all comes down to someone’s energy and the flow of conversation.

While some singles may miss old school, in-person dates, 60% of those surveyed say they like the “new dating normal.” And even after the pandemic ends, one in four plan to keep doing virtual dating. Being able to hop on a video call with your potential suitor and know in 30 seconds whether there’s a fan worth flaming, all from the comfort of your couch, could definitely help you avoid those awkward first dates with someone you don’t feel it with.
