Dress codes are the norm in high school, students know they’ll get in trouble for wearing a revealing crop top or offensive t-shirt. But one Texas teen was honestly shocked to be suspended over a dress code violation. The big offense? Wearing nail polish to class … because he’s a boy. Trevor Wilkinson is a senior at Clyde High School and it seems they have a policy against male students wearing nail polish, makeup and even earrings to school.
When the openly gay 17-year-old returned to school after Thanksgiving break, he was sporting black polish with multicolored flames on his nails. He landed in the principal’s office over it because the public high school’s handbook forbids it – but only for boys. Trevor was given the option of taking it off, but because he finds the whole thing ridiculous, he has refused. So he remains on in-school suspension.
It sounds sexist, but in the tiny town of Clyde, Texas…they’re standing their ground, and so is Trevor. He’s now started a Change.org petition to try to get the policy changed and it’s gotten more than 150-thousand signatures of support so far, along with thousands of comments from people who have the teen’s back. But the school isn’t backing down, they explain that a “diligent and thoughtful review” of dress code policy happens annually and that as of now, the rules remain in place. And Trevor remains hopeful that he can get more folks in his community to see things from his perspective – which is that it’s wrong to make a student miss out on learning because of nail color.
